James R. Weaver started Aeon Petroleum Consultants in 2018 with an extensive background in reserves estimation and evaluation, production optimization, and economic analysis. Weaver draws on his experience evaluating fields in the Permian and San Juan basins, south Texas, southeast New Mexico, the Mid-Continent, east Texas and Louisiana, the Rocky Mountains,Australia, China, Mexico, Peru, Canada, Russia, and the United Kingdom. Prior to Aeon, Weaver worked 16 years at DeGolyer and MacNaughton. His involvement in the petroleum industry, which began in 1979, has included private consulting as well as association with E&P independents, oil and gas banking firms, and the Amerada Hess Corporation in its Reserves and Joint Interests groups.
Weaver has spent a significant amount of time evaluating tight gas sands, coal seam gas, shale gas, shale oil, CO2 source reservoirs, and helium recovery projects. Specific areas of interest for tight gas sands include the Piceance, Delaware, San Juan, Permian, and Green River Basins. Weaver has performed coal seam gas evaluations in the San Juan and Powder River Basins of the U.S., and the Surat, Bowen, and Cooper Basins of Australia. Weaver has carried out shale gas evaluations for several clients in the Eagle Ford and Escondido Shales in south Texas.
Weaver’s petroleum engineering experience is wide ranging. For 2 years, he specialized in analyzing well logs. For the next 4 years, he performed reserves estimation and production analysis and managed infill drilling programs. During this time, he also screened reservoirs for enhanced recovery, including waterflood, CO2, and surfactant floods.
While working as a consulting bank engineer, Weaver provided clients with economic evaluations of oil and gas properties. For these projects he authored software for use in property evaluations and developed a database for tracking oil and gas well reserves changes. Representing oil and gas banking interests, he maintained a 100-percent success rate assessing the value and risk of petroleum properties held as collateral for commercial loans. He created a new method of determining loan value on properties that increased margin and decreased risk and he developed a system to calculate strike prices for oil and gas futures.
Weaver earned a B.S. degree in geology from the University of Tulsa in 1978 and a B.S. degree in petroleum engineering, also from the University of Tulsa, in 1979. Weaver is a registered engineer in the states of Texas (PE 117896) and Oklahoma (PE 13688) and is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Stephen E. Dunbar joined with CEO James R. Weaver at Aeon Petroleum Consultants in 2018.Dunbar’s experience as petroleum engineer started in 1977 working in north and west Texas oil fields with Texaco. He went on to spend 12 years with Amerada Hess in many roles including reserves engineer, exploration evaluation engineer, reservoir engineer and Joint Ventures engineer. This provided exposure to most USA Canadian oil and gas basins with an extensive concentration in the mid-continentarea. Reserves and economic evaluations were performed as primary duties during those years. More recently time was spent as an independent contractor most significantly being with DeGolyer & MacNaughton. Tasks included SEC and PRMS reserves and resources estimations for listed corporations. This later experience opened up opportunities to evaluate reservoirs from countries outside the USA and Canada such as Algeria, England, India, Nigeria, Poland and others.
Highlights from past experience include routine work in the Anadarko basin, Arkoma basin, Alaska late life Cook inlet, southern Louisiana, Nesson anticline, Rio Vista California, San Juan basin and most areas of Texas. Prior to Aeon, Dunbar worked 18 years at major oil companies and 20 plus years as independent for consulting firms including DeGolyer & MacNaughton, Lee Keeling and others.
Dunbar’s experience does include numerous A&D evaluations of significant project size both at the majors and as independent contractor. Those projects include western Oklahoma Granite Wash, Red Fork, deep Morrow gas, southern Louisiana salt dome and San Juan gas to mention a few. Dunbar was one of the initial evaluators of the Bakken play in 2006 while it was in its infancy on the oil and gas scene. He was involved with CO2 at Texaco and more recently with helium reservoirs. Some over-thrust belt experience includes those areas in the southern Oklahoma Wilberton play, Colorado and Canada.
Dunbar’s petroleum engineering experience includes more than 2 years as production field work with daily drilling and logging experience. This knowledge of well logs was essential as joint ventures engineer at Amerada for more than 7 years where daily participation decisions were made in drilling and development projects.
Dunbar earned a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1977. He also earned his Oklahoma Intern (EI 3789) designation in 1976 while in school.
